The State commercial building code applies to all commercial buildings (public buildings and places of employment) with few limited exceptions. Plan review, enforcement, and inspection provisions apply to most commercial buildings (public buildings and places of employment) with exceptions for some smaller buildings. Many plan reviews and inspections are conducted by local officials that are certified by the State to conduct those enforcement activities on their behalf. The State Uniform Dwelling Code applies to all one- and two-family dwellings. The State codes are uniform (mini/maxi) codes with strict limitations on municipal authority to have in place differing provisions. There are limited state inspectors for buildings. Most inspection is by local officials.
Code amendments do not involve subjects impacting wood construction.
There is currently no plan to adopt the 2018 IBC (and the other related I-Codes).
The State adopted the 2015 editions of the IBC, IEBC, and IECC on May 1, 2018. Wisconsin adopts and modifies the IBC, IECC, IMC, IFGC, and the IEBC as their Commercial Building Code.
