2015 International Residential Code (IRC)
Applicability (statewide, local, limited): LIMITED

Plan review, enforcement, inspection is limited to school facilities, day care facilities and group family day care homes. Building codes for other types of buildings are enforced at the local level only. If the local unit of government adopts any ordinance prescribing standards for new construction, the ordinance must use the 2021 edition of the IBC, but amendments are permitted to be adopted locally. There are no statewide residential building codes or energy codes, but municipalities may adopt a code at the local level.

Tall Mass Timber Adoption

The tall mass timber provisions went into effect in 2022.

Expected date most recent code will be adopted:

South Dakota is on the most current commercial building code at this time.  The 2018 IRC could be adopted as soon as 2023.
