State code must be enforced in local jurisdictions.
Amendments are relatively few. Local communities can opt out of enforcement, but cannot enforce outside of the state codes; local amendments are OK if approved by the SCBCC.
South Carolina is expected to adopt the 2021 codes In January 2023.
It is anticipated that the Building Code Council will consider the 2021 International Codes for adoption beginning in fall 2020 or spring 2021, with adoption in late 2021, and an effective date of Jan. 1, 2022. These dates may change.
