Michigan Dept. of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs (LARA)
Bureau of Construction Codes

Current Codes and Edition Adopted:
2015 International Building Code (IBC)
2018 International Residential Code (IRC)
2015 International Energy Conservation Code (IECC)
2015 International Existing Building Code (IEBC)
Applicability (statewide, local, limited): STATEWIDE

Plan review, enforcement and inspection is provided statewide, but in most cases the local municipalities provide the enforcement services on behalf of the State. The State provides a Statewide Jurisdiction List to assist users of the code with their permitting needs.

State inspectors exist for projects where local code officials do not provide inspection.

Amendments Disadvantaging Wood Construction:

Code amendments do not involve subjects impacting wood construction.

Expected date most recent code will be adopted.

Michigan had planned to adopt the 2018 IBC in 2022, however those plans have changed, and they will begin looking to skip the 2018 IBC and begin reviewing the 2021 IBC in 2023.

Next Update Cycle:

Michigan is beginning to review the 2021 IBC for adoption.

Michigan adopted the 2015 IBC in April of 2017 and the 2018 IRC in October of 2021.
