Current Codes and Edition Adopted:
2012 International Building Code (IBC)
2018 International Residential Code (IRC)
2012 International Fire Code (IFC)
2018 International Energy Conservation Code (IECC)
Applicability (statewide, local, limited): STATEWIDE

The commercial code applies to all Class 1 structures, which include buildings used by the public, by employees or by 3 or more residential tenants. Commercial plan review, enforcement and inspection service covers most commercial buildings with limited exceptions. Enforcement of codes on those buildings that are exempt from the State plan review are not exempt from local permitting requirements. Enforcement (plan review & inspection) of one and two family dwelling codes is handled at the local level only. 

Amendments Disadvantaging Wood Construction:

Code amendments do not involve subjects impacting wood construction. 

Expected date most recent code will be adopted:

The Indiana Fire Prevention and Building Safety Commission will begin to research the 2021 I-Codes in 2023.  Each month, they will review a new code, with the 2021 IBC tentatively scheduled for the May 2023 meeting and the 2021 IFC at the June meeting. 

Next Update Cycle:

The Indiana Department of Homeland Security makes revisions to the State Building and Residential Codes through the Fire Prevention & Building Safety Commission/Code Services arm.  

Notes:

Indiana adopted the 2012 edition of the IBC in December of 2014 and the 2018 edition of the IRC in December of 2019.
