Housing Affordability & the U.S. Wood Products Industry

The U.S. Wood Products industry is a critical part of solving our nation’s ongoing housing affordability crisis.

The Housing Crisis

The United States is facing a severe housing affordability crisis, with no region in the country offering a two‑bedroom rental affordable to a full‑time minimum‑wage worker. This shortage affects both urban centers and rural communities, underscoring the need for scalable, sustainable housing solutions. The forestry and wood products industry is positioned as a key part of solving this national challenge. The industry provides renewable, U.S.-grown building materials essential for new home construction and rehabilitation projects.

The U.S. wood product industry and working forests supply timber while also sustaining ecosystems, protecting wildlife, and improving forest resilience to disease and wildfire, making wood products both a practical and environmentally responsible solution for expanding affordable housing.

The U.S. wood products industry is helping meet housing demand by providing sustainable building materials and advancing policy solutions that address supply and demand side barriers to home building and home ownership.

Engaging on Policy

AWC is leading the industry’s engagement with Congress and is a member of multiple coalitions seeking to address the nation’s need for affordable housing. These coalitions include the ACTION Campaign and the Neighborhood Homes Coalition. In addition we actively worked with members of Congress to support the passage of and make permanent the Low-Income Housing Tax Credit.
