139 States Have Adopted Mass Timber Provisions

AWC has continued to assist states and jurisdictions with adopting the 2021 International Building Code (IBC) mass timber provisions, with 39 states having statewide or jurisdictional adoption. Additionally, AWC has provided mass timber education and outreach across the country, leading over 20 meetings with code official groups and mass timber education events in 2024.

AWC worked closely with Michigan State University’s MassTimber@MSU program to assist Michigan’s Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs as they prepared to adopt the 2021 IBC, which will now go into effect in April 2025. With the adoption of the 2021 IBC, AWC continues to stay engaged in supporting new education needs in the state as building inspectors and builders adjust to the latest code and mass timber requirements. AWC’s educational courses on mass timber will become eligible for continuing education units in the state, further increasing our engagement through both e-courses and in-person training.
