    The article, “Hidden dangers: Some of today’s building techniques worry fire experts,” left the reader questioning the fire safety of modern wood frame construction. It is unfortunate the author failed to do his homework and talk to the experts from the National Fire Protection Association, located in Quincy, MA. Fire experts, including those at NFPA, have studied the science and fire testing, which inform the ICC mass timber code provisions under consideration now in Massachusetts, as well as the 2021 NFPA Building Construction and Safety Code, which allows for tall mass timber structures up to 24 stories!

  • AWC Response to NCDOI Press Release

    LEESBURG, VA. – On June 11, the North Carolina Department of Insurance (NCDOI) issued a news release warning of the use of European lumber in North Carolina. The news release identified several potential use issues given the building community’s lack of familiarity with European lumber and served to alert suppliers, designers, builders, and regulators that lumber should be used in accordance with applicable codes and standards; however, there were several statements that need to be clarified or corrected.

  • AWC Conducts CLT Connection Tests

    LEESBURG, VA. – The American Wood Council (AWC) completed testing of connections used in recent full-scale tests of cross-laminated timber (CLT) diaphragm. The latest test results indicated that the connections performed better than expected, resulting in higher than expected shear capacities of the CLT diaphragms.

  • AWC Conducts Full-Scale CLT Diaphragm Tests

    LEESBURG, VA. – The American Wood Council (AWC) has successfully completed two full-scale cross-laminated timber (CLT) diaphragm tests to provide strength and deformation data important for evaluating CLT diaphragm resistance to lateral wind and earthquake forces. The tests were completed at Weyerhaeuser’s ISO 17025 accredited test facility in Federal Way, Washington.
