In 2006, the U.S. Chemical Safety and Hazard Investigation Board (CSB) initiated a study of dust explosions. The CSB concluded that such explosions were a serious hazard in American industry, and that increased efforts were needed to address the hazard. The CSB had identified 281 combustible dust incidents that killed 119, injured 718, and caused extensive damage to facilities between 1980 and 2005. In 2008 the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) placed "combustible dust," specifically including wood dust, on its National Emphasis List, resulting in increased enforcement activities.
