* The City of Anchorage has adopted the 2018 International Codes, with amendments, effective 10/27/20 Anchorage Local Adoption of the 2012 International Codes effective April 1, 2016: http://www.muni.org/Departments/OCPD/development/BSD/2012 Building Codes/AO 2015-127 As Amended.pdf
Applicability (statewide, local, limited): LIMITED
Codes in Alaska are adopted by administrative rulemaking by either the Alaska State Fire Marshal or the Department of Labor. The adopted codes by state agencies are mandatory and fall under state inspection programs unless a local jurisdiction has been delegated the code program as a "deferred jurisdiction." When this occurs, the local jurisdiction administers and enforces their local program of the adopted state codes. Buildings of four units or more are subject to the code and inspections by the SFM office who is also the building department in Alaska. Some banks require other inspections for bank financed projects that are not subject to SFM inspections or code.

Next Update Cycle (amendment opportunities):
No update schedule has been provided. During the last update in May of 2017, the state chose to update the state code but continue to reference the 2012 editions of the International Codes. Updating to a more recent edition of the I-codes may occur at any time. Individual city jurisdictions can adopt and enforce any editions of the I-codes which take precedence over the state codes. Anchorage adopted the 2018 I-codes effective October 2020.
